Nathan Dell was conceived on the decks of a sixty foot wooden yacht named the "La Renard" moored at the Garrison Bight Marina in Key West, Florida. His father had become a cast away, a man who gave up a promising career as a broadcast celebrity and his connections to a wealthy and powerful family to live the life of a bohemian alcoholic cruising the islands, living aboard an array of sailboats and yachts. The boy was an unwelcome addition born into the resentment and rage of this tragic portrait of a man. Nathan runs away from home at an early age only to discover the dark side of the Florida Keys, the underground world of the smugglers and pirates that still inhabit the islands to this day. He finds work on board a shrimp trawler and slowly becomes a participant in events that would send the tourists running for the mainland if they knew the truth.
